Journey

Voyages from Montreal

by Alexander Mackenzie

Alexander Mackenzie, a fur trader from Stornoway on the Isle of Lewis, went down the great river that now bears his name to the Arctic Ocean in 1789. In 1793 he crossed the Rockies and reached the Pacific, the first European to cross the continent north of Mexico, and painted his name and the date on a rock by the sea. He published his account of both voyages in London in 1801, and was knighted the next year.
