Journey

Roughing It in the Bush

by Susanna Moodie

Susanna Moodie, one of the literary Strickland sisters of Suffolk, came to Upper Canada with her husband in 1832, and spent hard years on a farm near Cobourg and then in the bush north of Peterborough. Her book of 1852 was written partly to warn gentlefolk like herself against coming out to clear the forest. Its sketches of neighbours, fires, ague and loneliness have made it one of the founding books of Canadian writing.
