Medicine

Wonderful Adventures of Mrs. Seacole in Many Lands

by Mary Seacole

Mary Seacole learned doctoring from her mother, who kept a lodging house for invalid soldiers in Kingston, Jamaica, and she nursed cholera in Panama before the War Office turned her down as a nurse for the Crimea. She went anyway, at her own expense, and kept the British Hotel near Balaclava, feeding and dosing the soldiers and going out to the wounded after the fighting. Her book of 1857 is one of the first autobiographies by a Black woman in Britain.
