Kim

by Rudyard Kipling

An orphaned Irish boy in colonial India is recruited as a spy while also apprenticed to a wandering holy man seeking spiritual release, and never quite manages to choose fully between the two callings. Kipling clearly loved the actual texture of the road more than either plot he set upon it. The book never resolves which loyalty, empire or wandering faith, deserves to win, and I suspect that was deliberate.
