Adventure

The Virginian

by Owen Wister

A cowboy known only as the Virginian, a schoolteacher from Vermont, and the railway bringing the East to Wyoming. Wister’s novel of 1902 more or less invented the western, including the line “When you call me that, smile!” It begins with the narrator stepping off a train at Medicine Bow.
