Plain Tales from the Hills

by Rudyard Kipling

Forty short stories of British India, most of them written for the Civil and Military Gazette in Lahore, where Kipling worked as a young journalist. They came out as a book in 1888, when he was twenty-two, and within two years he was famous in London. Simla gossip, broken engagements and men out of their depth are told in a voice that seems to know far more than it lets on.
