Puck of Pook’s Hill

by Rudyard Kipling

Two children, Dan and Una, act A Midsummer Night’s Dream three times over in a fairy ring on Midsummer Eve, and call up Puck himself, the last of the People of the Hills left in England. He brings them visitors from their own Sussex valley’s past: Weland the smith of the old gods, a Norman knight, a Roman centurion who served on Hadrian’s Wall. Kipling wrote it in 1906 at Bateman’s, his house at Burwash, and set it in the fields around it.
