Jude the Obscure

by Thomas Hardy

A stonemason wants an education the world has decided is not for men of his class, and every door closes on him a little more decisively than the last. Hardy called it his bitterest book, and readers of the time agreed loudly enough that he stopped writing novels altogether afterward. I keep it in the contested section because it made people that angry, on purpose.
