The Library After Dark

Contested

A Theologico-Political Treatise

by Benedict de Spinoza

Spinoza’s argument for reading the Bible as a book written by people in history, and for leaving thought free in a free state. He published it anonymously in 1670, under the name of an invented printer in Hamburg. It was banned in Holland four years later, and he was called an atheist for the rest of his life.
