Tess of the d’Urbervilles

by Thomas Hardy

A young woman’s one youthful mistake follows her through every subsequent chance at happiness, judged far more harshly by the society around her than by the book itself. Hardy subtitled it a pure woman, deliberately provoking readers who disagreed. It cost him a great deal of his remaining goodwill with the critics of his day, and he clearly considered that a fair trade.
