Far from the Madding Crowd

by Thomas Hardy

A woman inherits a farm and three suitors along with it, and spends the book discovering that competence and good judgment are not the same skill. Hardy is gentler here than in his later, angrier novels, though the ache is already visible underneath. The sheep alone cause more plot than most human characters manage elsewhere on this shelf.
