Walker’s Appeal

by David Walker

David Walker, a free Black clothes dealer in Boston, called in 1829 on enslaved Americans to resist, and on the country to read its own Declaration of Independence. Southern states made circulating it a crime, and Georgia offered a reward for him. He sent copies south with sailors, some sewn into clothing.
