The Library After Dark

Modern

In a German Pension

by Katherine Mansfield

Mansfield’s first book, from 1911: sharp, satirical sketches of the guests at a Bavarian spa where she stayed in 1909, eating, bathing and lecturing one another. She was in her early twenties. She later refused to let it be reprinted, thinking it immature, which is a good reason to read it.
