Such Is Life

by Joseph Furphy

Tom Collins, a minor government official with a taste for philosophy, recounts a few scattered days among the bullock-drivers of the Riverina in 1883, and misses half of what is going on around him. Joseph Furphy described its temper as democratic and its bias as offensively Australian. Published by the Bulletin in 1903, it is long, digressive and funny, and took a long time to find its readers.
