The Arabian Nights Entertainments

by Andrew Lang

Andrew Lang’s selection of the best-known stories of the Thousand and One Nights, retold for children in 1898: Aladdin, Ali Baba, Sindbad and the rest, told by Scheherazade to keep herself alive. The Nights came into Europe through Antoine Galland’s French translation, begun in 1704, and English children have read them ever since. David Copperfield read them, in some older translation, with his father’s books in the little room upstairs.
