Scrambles Amongst the Alps

by Edward Whymper

Edward Whymper went to the Alps in 1860 as a young wood-engraver, sent to make drawings of the peaks, and spent the next five summers trying to climb the Matterhorn. He reached its summit on 14 July 1865 with six companions, and on the way down four of them fell to their deaths when the rope between them broke. This book of 1871, illustrated with his own engravings, ends with advice that climbers still quote.
