Woman in the Nineteenth Century

by Margaret Fuller

Margaret Fuller’s book of 1845, grown from The Great Lawsuit, an essay in The Dial, the magazine she edited before Emerson took it over. It asks that every way be open to women, and if you ask what offices they may fill, she answers any: let them be sea-captains, if you will. Five years later she drowned in a shipwreck off Fire Island, and Emerson sent Thoreau to the beach to find what he could.
