The Library After Dark

Contested

The Well of Loneliness

by Radclyffe Hall

Stephen Gordon, born into an English county family and named for the son her father wanted, grows up knowing she will love women. In 1928 a London magistrate condemned Radclyffe Hall’s novel as obscene and ordered the copies destroyed, though its boldest line is “and that night they were not divided.” A New York court cleared it the following year.
