The Souls of Black Folk

by W. E. B. Du Bois

An essay collection arguing that a Black American in this country lives behind a veil, seeing the nation clearly while being seen by it only partially, if at all. Du Bois coined language for that condition still in use today, over a century later. It is contested for reasons that have less to do with the book than with how accurately it still describes things.
