Five Children and It

Five children find a grumpy, furry sand-fairy in a gravel pit who grants one wish a day, each of which goes wrong by sunset. Nesbit invented the modern children’s fantasy of ordinary families and inconvenient magic, and she is still funnier than most of her heirs.
