The Letters of Robert Burns

by Robert Burns

Burns wrote his letters as carefully as his poems, mostly in an English far more formal than his verse, to patrons, friends, publishers and the women he loved. He wrote to Mrs Frances Dunlop, the most faithful of his correspondents, for nearly ten years. The letters to Clarinda, Agnes McLehose, written in Edinburgh in the winter of 1787 under pastoral names, are among the oddest love letters in the language.
