A Lover's Complaint

by William Shakespeare

A long poem in which a heartbroken young woman recounts, to a passing stranger, exactly how she was persuaded into ruin by a beautiful and practiced liar. It is bleaker and less forgiving than most of the sonnets it is sometimes bound alongside. Even Shakespeare, it turns out, could write about being deceived without offering the deceived party a witty comeback.
