Poetry

A Shropshire Lad

by A. E. Housman

Sixty-three short poems of country lads, market towns, soldiering, hangings and early death, published at Housman’s own expense in 1896. Housman was a professor of Latin who had grown up in Worcestershire, looking west to the Shropshire hills. It sold slowly at first, then for decades.
