Lady Susan

by Jane Austen

Lady Susan Vernon, a widow as beautiful as she is unscrupulous, comes to stay with her brother-in-law in pursuit of a husband for her daughter, or perhaps for herself. Austen wrote this short novel in letters, probably in the mid-1790s, and never tried to publish it. Her nephew printed it in 1871, in the second edition of his Memoir.
