The Story of an African Farm

by Olive Schreiner

Two cousins, Lyndall and Em, and a farmer’s son, Waldo, grow up on a lonely farm in the Karoo. Olive Schreiner, born at a mission station in the Cape, published it in 1883 under the name Ralph Iron, and its heroine’s arguments for women’s independence made it famous. It is often called the first great South African novel.
