The Vicar of Wakefield

by Oliver Goldsmith

Dr Primrose, a country vicar, loses his fortune, his home and very nearly his family, and bears it all with a patience that is sometimes funny and sometimes heartbreaking. Oliver Goldsmith, born in County Longford, wrote it in London. Samuel Johnson sold the manuscript to save him from arrest for his rent.
