Medicine

Microbe Hunters

by Paul de Kruif

Paul de Kruif, a bacteriologist who left the laboratory to write, tells the lives of the men who found the microbes, from Leeuwenhoek grinding his lenses in Delft to Pasteur, Koch and Ehrlich. He had just helped Sinclair Lewis with the medicine in Arrowsmith. Microbe Hunters came out in 1926 and set a good many of its readers on the way to becoming scientists.
