Medicine

An Inquiry into the Causes and Effects of the Variolae Vaccinae

by Edward Jenner

Edward Jenner, a country doctor at Berkeley in Gloucestershire, had heard that dairymaids who caught cowpox did not take the smallpox. In 1796 he tested it on James Phipps, the eight-year-old son of his gardener, and in 1798 he published this account himself. The word vaccine comes from vacca, Latin for a cow.
