The Octopus

by Henry Lee

Henry Lee was the naturalist of the Brighton Aquarium, where octopuses were among the great attractions of the 1870s. In this book of 1875 he sets the devil-fish of fiction, Victor Hugo’s above all, beside the animal he watched every day. His octopus is cleverer and stranger than Hugo’s, and much less wicked.
