While the Billy Boils

by Henry Lawson

Henry Lawson’s first big book of stories, from 1896: shearers, swagmen, selectors and drovers’ dogs, told in a plain, dry voice that is very funny and then suddenly not at all. The billy is the tin can a bushman boiled his tea in over the fire. There is one on the fire in this room.
