Narrative of the Voyage of H.M.S. Rattlesnake

by John MacGillivray

John MacGillivray was the naturalist on HMS Rattlesnake, surveying the Great Barrier Reef and the coasts of New Guinea from 1846 to 1850. The assistant surgeon on board was the young Thomas Henry Huxley, whose papers on the jellyfish he studied there began his career. MacGillivray’s account is full of the islands and people of the Torres Strait.
