The Romantic Scottish Ballads

by Robert Chambers

Robert Chambers, the Edinburgh publisher, argued in 1859 that many of the great romantic ballads were not ancient at all, but written in the eighteenth century, most of them by Lady Wardlaw, the author of Hardyknute. Few were persuaded. Chambers was also, as was revealed only after his death, the anonymous author of Vestiges of the Natural History of Creation.
