Journey

The Journal of a Tour to the Hebrides

by James Boswell

In the autumn of 1773 James Boswell took Samuel Johnson through the Highlands and the Western Isles, a journey Johnson had wanted to make since boyhood. Boswell’s father was laird of Auchinleck in Ayrshire, a few miles from the farm at Mauchline where Burns wrote many of his best poems. Boswell published his journal in 1785, the year before the Kilmarnock edition.
