Low Tide on Grand Pré

by Bliss Carman

Bliss Carman grew up in Fredericton, New Brunswick, a cousin of Charles G. D. Roberts, and spent most of his life in the United States as a wandering poet and editor. This was his first book of poems, in 1893, and its title poem is set by the tidal meadows of Grand Pré in Nova Scotia, where the Acadians were driven out in 1755. In his day he was often called Canada’s poet laureate.
