The Divine Comedy

by Dante Alighieri

Midway through his life, in a dark wood, Dante loses his way, and is led down through Hell and up the mountain of Purgatory by Virgil, and through Paradise by Beatrice. He wrote it in exile from Florence, in Italian rather than Latin, early in the fourteenth century. It made the Tuscan he wrote in the model for a whole language.
