Herbals, Their Origin and Evolution

by Agnes Arber

A history of the printed herbal from 1470 to 1670, the books that showed physicians and gardeners which plant was which, by the Cambridge botanist Agnes Arber, first published in 1912. It is the best place to see what a herbal of the manuscript’s age was trying to do. Set its woodcuts beside the plants on the lectern and the difference is plain: these were meant to be recognised.
