The Mirror of Alchimy

by Roger Bacon

A short treatise on how metals are made and changed, printed in English in 1597 under the name of Roger Bacon, the Franciscan friar of Oxford who was said to have made a brass head that spoke. Whether Bacon wrote it is doubtful, as it is of much that bears his name. In 1921 a professor at the University of Pennsylvania announced that Bacon had written the Voynich Manuscript; he had not.
