The Library After Dark

Ciphers

The Little Cryptogram

by Joseph Gilpin Pyle

In 1888 Ignatius Donnelly published nearly a thousand pages proving, by a cipher he had found in the plays, that Bacon wrote Shakespeare. Pyle applied Donnelly’s own method to a single page of Hamlet and drew out a message mocking Donnelly. It is a very short book, and a useful one to have read before believing any decipherment.
