Natural History

The Sea

by Jules Michelet

Jules Michelet, the great historian of France, turned in his late fifties to books about nature, written with his wife Athénaïs: the bird, the insect, the mountain, and in 1861 the sea. It is less a work of science than a long, impassioned meditation on the ocean as the mother of life. It is none the worse for that.
