The Library After Dark

Journey

Sketches in Canada

by Anna Jameson

Anna Jameson, born in Dublin, came to Toronto in the winter of 1836 to join a husband she no longer loved, and in the summer of 1837 set off into the wilderness, as far as Sault Ste Marie and Manitoulin Island. She went by wagon, by schooner and by canoe, shot the rapids of the Sault, and wrote about the Ojibwe she met with more respect than most travellers of her time. This is a later reissue, under a new title, of the travels in her Winter Studies and Summer Rambles in Canada of 1838.
