The Library After Dark

Philosophy

Nature

by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson’s first book, published without his name in 1836, the year the Transcendental Club first met. It begins by asking why we should not also enjoy an original relation to the universe. Crossing a bare common at twilight, he becomes, in its most famous sentence, a transparent eye-ball.
