May-Day, and Other Pieces

by Ralph Waldo Emerson

Emerson’s second book of poems, published in 1867, when he was sixty-three. Here are Days and Brahma, the Boston Hymn he read on the day the Emancipation Proclamation took effect, and Voluntaries, for the Black soldiers of the 54th Massachusetts: “So nigh is grandeur to our dust”. It ends with Terminus, which begins “It is time to be old, / To take in sail”.
