The Library After Dark

Novel

The Light That Failed

by Rudyard Kipling

Dick Heldar draws the war in the Sudan for the illustrated papers, comes home famous, and finds that an old sword cut is slowly taking his sight. He loves Maisie, a painter he grew up with, who will not give up her own work to love him back. It was Kipling’s first novel, in 1891, and he wrote two endings: a happy one for the magazine, and the one he preferred for the book.
