Novel

The Annals of the Parish

by John Galt

John Galt’s Micah Balwhidder, minister of Dalmailing in Ayrshire, sets down what happened in each year of his ministry from 1760 to 1810: a new road, a smuggler, the French war, a cotton mill. Galt published it in 1821; the parish is invented, but the Ayrshire is Burns’s own. It is one of the first novels to show a whole community changing over a lifetime.
