Novel

The Blithedale Romance

by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Hawthorne’s novel of 1852, set in a community of reformers not unlike Brook Farm, where he spent most of 1841 and shovelled manure to pay for his share. Its narrator, Miles Coverdale, watches everyone and commits himself to nothing. Readers have looked for Margaret Fuller in its Zenobia ever since, though Hawthorne’s preface asks them not to look for real people.
