The Adventures of Roderick Random

by Tobias Smollett

Smollett’s first novel, of 1748: a penniless young Scot goes to London, is pressed into the navy as a surgeon’s mate and sees the disaster at Cartagena in 1741, as Smollett himself had. It is rough, fast and funny, and Dickens loved it. David Copperfield, alone and miserable at Blunderstone, “sustained my own idea of Roderick Random for a month at a stretch.”
