The Library After Dark

Adventure

The Coming Race

by Edward Bulwer-Lytton

A mining engineer falls through the floor of the world and finds an underground civilization that outgrew war, want, and us, all thanks to a force its people call Vril. Bulwer-Lytton meant it half as satire and half as warning, and later readers took the warning rather more literally than he probably intended. Read it before you look up what people did with the word afterward.
