The Library After Dark

Adventure

Heidi

by Johanna Spyri

Heidi, an orphan of five, is taken up the mountain above the village of Dorfli to live with her grandfather, a solitary old man the villagers are afraid of. Johanna Spyri published the story in two parts in 1880 and 1881, and it has hardly been out of print since. When Heidi is sent down to Frankfurt as a companion for Clara, who cannot walk, she grows ill with longing for the goats, the pines and the evening light on the peaks.
