The Great Stone Face

by Nathaniel Hawthorne

Hawthorne’s tales of the White Mountains of New Hampshire, gathered in one small book. In the title story a boy grows up in a valley under a cliff that looks like a great face, waiting all his life for the man the face is said to foretell, and in The Ambitious Guest a family by a mountain road talks of being remembered on the night a landslide comes down. The Old Man of the Mountain, the rock that suggested the face, fell in 2003.
