Soldiers Three

by Rudyard Kipling

Mulvaney the Irishman, Ortheris the Cockney and Learoyd the Yorkshireman are three privates in India who drink, fight, steal a dog and tell tall stories, mostly Mulvaney’s. Kipling first published these tales in 1888, in a paper-covered series sold at Indian railway bookstalls. The three turn up again and again in his early work, and readers took to them as to old friends.
